A time to be thankful, celebrate and reflect; Happy Thanksgiving to all!

IMG_0217Hello everyone!

This fall has been jam packed with lots to celebrate! In particular the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association celebrated their 50 year anniversary, and I wanted to make a special mention of this as it is a huge landmark for our profession here in Canada. The festivities took place in Toronto, Ontario this year over a three day conference. Really wanted to be there, but was signed up for a half marathon run  that weekend in Calgary. The run went very well, no medical mishaps and it was a grace to run with some very close family and friends:)

Very thankful to all who have supported the clinic this last year, we have truly grown so much this year and  have been busy throughout.  Many many thank you’s to all who believe in what the clinic has to offer, and letting us be a part of your healthy mouths, and healthy lives. So much to be thankful for !!

Wishing everyone a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving Long Weekend with your family and friends.

Helping Canadians understand Gum Disease

Best Health Mag Oct 13One of the things we love to do with our patients is educate them! The comments and feedback from our patients have told us that they love understanding more about how their everyday choices can affect their oral health.

Rocell, owner and head clinician at White Summit Dental had a chance to chat with Best Health magazine about gum disease.

Have a read of the article here.

The Calgary Flood of 2013

UPDATE – Monday, July 1st, 9:00am

We are very happy to report we were able to open and restart operations as of Friday June 28th, 2013!! For those of you who we had to cancel appointments for, we’ll be contacting you in the next week or so to reschedule.

The affected areas and communities still have a long way to go. We were able to donate some tools, buckets and flashlights to some of the communities who needed equipment. If you’d like to help, we recommend the following two methods:

It’s great to see Calgarians getting together and helping the people and businesses get back on their feet! Don’t forget to support your local Calgary business getting back on it’s feet too!

We hope you’re doing ok too; Our positive thoughts are with everyone rebuilding and helping to rebuild!

Rocell & Dave

UPDATE – Tuesday, June 25th, 1:50pm

  • Appointments for Wednesday June 26th are now canceled. Our building operators have been unable to get electrical back online to allow us to continue business.
  • We will not be contacting patients due to our system continuing to be off-line. We apologize for the inconvenience, and will be in contact with patients to confirm any up-coming appointments.

In the mean time if you need flood info, make sure you’re using the appropriate authoritative resources. Here is a list from our Alderperson:

Monday, June 24th, 11:45am

Wow… The events over the past few days have been shocking, saddening, awe-inspiring and amazing. The flood here was nothing short of shocking, but the response from all levels of government, and the people of Calgary pulling together has been nothing short of amazing!

Thankfully, our immediate friends, family, and our practice are all okay. The practice currently doesn’t have any power, and we expect this to be rectified by tonight or tomorrow at the latest. For now we’re going to cancel appointments on Tuesday, June 25th.

We know that not everyone made it out of this disaster as unscathed as we did, so if there are any oral hygiene supplies you need to help out, please let us know, and we’ll do our best to contribute.

  • White Summit will be closed Tuesday June 25th as we wait for the power to be restored. If you had an appointment scheduled for this day, consider it canceled, and we’ll contact you to reschedule once our systems are back online.
  • If you or your neighbours, family or friends need some oral health products, please let us know, and we’ll do our best to contribute. Once the power is restored we’ll post an update to let you know when we can help.
  • If you’re interesting in contributing to the flood victims, please consider donating to the Canadian Red Cross

Best wishes to all of you, and we look forward to contributing to rebuilding the effected areas of the city and getting Calgary back to the most amazing place it normally is.

Celebrating National Dental Hygiene Week 2012!

“Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”
St. Francis of Assisi

This year I was able to get out and celebrate National Dental Hygiene Week within the community of Kensington. I had the pleasure of visiting with 4 different West Hillhurst Preschool Classes and boy was it fun! Teeth were counted in English and en francais; we learnt how to brush teeth and gums using Doogan Dog as a trusty but sneezy model,: kids listened with wide eyes and open ears during story time and explanations about what sugar bugs did in their mouth! What an attentive, and happy go lucky audience.

Dental Hygiene Week is a time when Canada recognizes the initiatives of this profession and how it impacts Canadians. It is both a good time and bad time to be a hygienist in 2012; good because of the changes made to the Health Professions Act that gave Canadians more direct access to dental hygiene care and bad because of economic changes that affected  the landscape of once plentiful jobs for us hygienists.

If there is one thing that has not changed, it is the constant need for access to preventive oral health care in this country. I would like to personally thank every hygienist I know who has been instrumental in spearheading these legislative changes that would affect how healthy Canadians mouths could be.  You pioneers and trailblazers are amazing individuals! This is a great time to be a hygienist and it is only going to get better. Lots of faith, hope, and love.

Our Junior Achievement team 2011-2012

Quality Control

Quality Control

We are so proud of the achievers in our Junior Achievement group this year! All of the participants worked so well together, and attacked problems with a maturity sometimes not seen in the professional world.

For those of you who are not familiar with Junior Achievement, it is a non-profit organization that focuses on teaching business and economic skills to youths. Typically participants are in High-School, but they also have some in-school programs for a younger audience.

By far the most popular program is the “Company Program”. During this after-school adventure, achievers are taught the basics of business including raising capital, market research, choosing a product, buying raw materials and manufacturing a product, and finally liquidation.

Of course throughout the program there are challenges that come up and the achievers need to work together to overcome issues and develop solutions. Not only is it a fantastic program to learn about business, but it also teaches some early work/life skills such as how to work together on a project, and how to overcome what may seem to be huge obstacles.

This year Rocell and I had the pleasure of working with some of the best achievers we’ve ever seen! They are even in the running for the company of the year! There is some tough competition this year, so it’ll be interesting to see how they do. Either way, we are so proud of them!

To learn about their product, have a look at this small snippet Shaw TV did on our JA group.

Congrats Non-scents! It was such a pleasure to work with you all!!

Gift from the Heart Day warmed up the month of February!

What a great day it was!!! Thank you Bev Woods for your most excellent initiative to offer free dental hygiene care for those who otherwise could not afford it. To Sally Lloyd (for bringing the day out West in Canada). And a great BIG thank you to the dear hygienists (Lenora, Jeanelle and Jody and Dave the “honorary hygienist”) who helped make this day a success at White Summit Dental Hygiene Clinic:)))

What a rewarding day for all!!! In total we saw 7 patients in our clinic who are now on there way to more healthy gums and mouth.
The ability to offer and share ones passion as a hygienist, to patients who just plain and simple cannot afford it, is the best gift for us worker bees. Have a fabulous Family Day weekend everyone!! And remember that a healthy smile leads to a healthy heart!

Free Day of Dental Hygiene Treatment with a “Gift from the Heart”

Mark your calendars people!!

February is the month of LOVE. Hygienists in Canada are celebrating the day of taking care of our hearts, by offering free dental hygiene services to those in financial need on February 12, 2011 in Ontario and Alberta.

On February 12, 2011 White Summit Dental Hygiene Clinic will be offering free dental hygiene treatment for patients who are unable to afford their care. This event was originally spear-headed by Bev Woods, a dental hygienist in Ontario. It has become so popular that it has now spread to Alberta and BC. If anyone you know could benefit from this free day of service, let us know and we will be glad to schedule them in!
